The photographer behind Gold Medal Photos is Stan Lapinski. Stan is a former oarsman, who, in the 1970s, began photographing rowing scenes along the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta Course in St. Catharines. Before long, he was asked to photograph winning crews at the grandstand, and that was when Gold Medal Photos began. Since then, he has photographed tens of thousands of medal winners, and sold at least as many photos to satisfied customers worldwide.
Stan is now the official photographer of both the Canadian Secondary Schools Rowing Association Championship Regatta, and the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta. Over the years, he has also been an accredited photographer at the 1999 World Rowing Championships, the World University Games Regatta, the Summer Canada Games Regatta and the 2010 FISA World Rowing Masters Regatta. His photos, both rowing and non-rowing, have appeared in publications around the world and are currently featured on dozens of Web sites.
With an extensive archive of negatives going back a quarter of a century, Stan still fills requests for photos which he took decades ago!
In addition to working as a freelance photographer, Stan has edited two rowing history books: Denis Morris High School: A Rowing Tradition Since 1959, and the highly-praised, The St. Catharines Rowing Club: 100 Years in a Row. His most recent book is Brock University Athletics: 40 Exciting Seasons of Generals and Badgers.
Stan has also compiled a record of the winners at the Annual Regattas of the C.A.A.O. from 1880 to 1902 and the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta from 1903 to last year. In addition, he has collected information about the Henley Regatta trophies and arranged it in a database.
His current project is writing a history of the Annual Regattas of the C.A.A.O. and the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta.
